Sikhism·Raag Gond·Shabad 48
Verse 4 of 5

My Rank Erased, I Walked Right In

ਏਕੁ ਮੁਕੰਦੁ ਕਰੈ ਉਪਕਾਰੁ ॥
ayk mukand karai upkaar.
When the One Liberator does me a favor,
ਹਮਰਾ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
hamraa kahaa karai sansaar.
then what can the world do to me?
ਮੇਟੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੂਏ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥
maytee jaat hoo-ay darbaar.
Erasing my social status, I have entered His Court.
ਤੁਹੀ ਮੁਕੰਦ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗ ਤਾਰਿ ॥੩॥
tuhee mukand jog jug taar. ||3||
You, Mukanday, are potent throughout the four ages. ||3||

In plain words

When the One shows me kindness, what power does the world's judgment have over me anymore?

The label of my rank was wiped clean away, and I walked straight into the One's own court.

Before the One, every rank the world imposed is wiped clean — and every door opens.
The deeper layer

The social heart of the shabad — maytee jaat hoo-ay darbaar, caste erased, I stand in the divine court. Ravidas states plainly what the world denied him: before the One, the ranking that shut so many doors simply dissolves, and the lowest-born walks into the highest hall. Hamraa kahaa karai sansaar — once the One is with you, the world's contempt loses all its power. This caste-leveling is carried at full strength; it is the saint's own hard-won dignity.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever seen someone treated as less who was really every bit as worthy?
