Sikhism·Raag Gond·Shabad 48
Verse 5 of 5

Lifted, and the Thirst Is Quenched

ਉਪਜਿਓ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਹੂਆ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥
upji-o gi-aan hoo-aa pargaas.
Spiritual wisdom has welled up, and I have been enlightened.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲੀਨੇ ਕੀਟ ਦਾਸ ॥
kar kirpaa leenay keet daas.
In His Mercy, the Lord has made this worm His slave.
ਕਹੁ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਅਬ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਚੂਕੀ ॥
kaho ravidaas ab tarisnaa chookee.
Says Ravi Daas, now my thirst is quenched;
ਜਪਿ ਮੁਕੰਦ ਸੇਵਾ ਤਾਹੂ ਕੀ ॥੪॥੧॥
jap mukand sayvaa taahoo kee. ||4||1||
I meditate on Mukanday the Liberator, and I serve Him. ||4||1||

In plain words

Understanding welled up in me like sudden light, and by pure kindness the One lifted even me and claimed me as His own.

Now the endless thirst has gone quiet — I hold the Liberator close and gladly serve.

When grace lifts you and claims you, the restless thirst finally goes quiet.
The deeper layer

Kar kirpaa leenay keet daas — the literal calls the self a worm the One raised up; carried here as empty-handedness, the wonder that grace stooped to lift even the lowliest and made him beloved — not self-contempt but astonishment at mercy. Trisnaa chookee, the burning thirst of craving, finally stills. The shabad that began by calling the One father and mother ends fully at home, wanting nothing more.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like when a longing is finally, completely satisfied?
