Sikhism·Raag Gond·Shabad 7
Verse 3 of 3

By Grace, Seeing All As One

ਬਕਤੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਬੂਝਤ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
bakto kartaa boojhat kartaa.
The Creator is the One who speaks, and the Creator is the One who understands.
ਆਵਤੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਾਤੁ ਭੀ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
aavat kartaa jaat bhee kartaa.
The Creator comes, and the Creator also goes.
ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਰਗੁਨ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
nirgun kartaa sargun kartaa.
The Creator is absolute and without qualities; the Creator is related, with the most excellent qualities.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਮਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾ ॥੨॥੧॥
gur parsaad naanak samdristaa. ||2||1||
By Guru's Grace, Nanak looks upon all the same. ||2||1||

In plain words

The One speaks and the One understands; the One arrives and the One departs.

The One is beyond all form and also wears every beautiful quality — and by grace, the heart learns to look on everyone the same.

Feel the One in everything, and you begin to see everyone as equal.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan ends with the gift this seeing brings: we learn to look at everyone the same way.

More pairs come first. Bakto kartaa boojhat kartaa — the Maker speaks, and the Maker understands. The Maker comes, and the Maker goes. Nirgun kartaa sargun kartaa — the Maker is nirgun, beyond every quality, and sargun, full of every good quality.

Then the song lands: gur parsaad naanak samdristaa. Gur parsaad means by the Guru's grace. Samdristaa means seeing with an equal eye. When you truly feel the One in everyone, you stop ranking people. Think of a team captain who stops picking favorites, so everyone gets passed the ball. That is Oneness lived out as fairness and love.

A Question to Sit With

What would change if you looked at everyone as carrying the same one light?
