Sikhism·Raag Gond·Shabad 7
Verse 2 of 3

The Maker In Every Motion

ਸੁਨਤੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੇਖਤ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
sunto kartaa paykhat kartaa.
The Creator listens, and the Creator sees.
ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੋ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
adristo kartaa daristo kartaa.
The Creator is unseen, and the Creator is seen.
ਓਪਤਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਪਰਲਉ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
opat kartaa parla-o kartaa.
The Creator forms, and the Creator destroys.
ਬਿਆਪਤ ਕਰਤਾ ਅਲਿਪਤੋ ਕਰਤਾ ॥੧॥
bi-aapat kartaa alipato kartaa. ||1||
The Creator touches, and the Creator is detached. ||1||

In plain words

The One who made everything is the very One who listens, and the One who sees.

The One is hidden, and the One is right here in plain view.

The One shapes things into being and lets them go.

The One touches everything, yet is never tangled in any of it.

The same One is inside every motion of the world, yet held by none of it.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says the same One is inside every action, and yet caught by none of it.

The verse is a chain of pairs, and every pair ends with kartaa, the Maker. Sunto kartaa paykhat kartaa — the Maker listens, and the Maker sees. The Maker is unseen, and seen. The Maker forms things and ends them. Bi-aapat kartaa alipato kartaa — the Maker touches everything and stays untouched. Alipato means not stuck, like a lotus flower that rests on muddy water yet stays clean.

Think of sunlight on a puddle. The light reaches right into the water, but the sun never gets wet. The One is fully in everything and trapped by nothing. A Gurmukh, a person who faces the Guru, learns to live with that same balance.

A Question to Sit With

Can you be fully involved in something and still stay calm and free inside?
