Give Yourself To The Boundless One

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੀ ਲਾਗਉ ਸੇਵ ॥
paarbarahm kee laaga-o sayv.
Commit yourself to the service of the Transcendent Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੁਝੈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur tay sujhai niranjan dayv. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Through the Guru, one understands the Immaculate, Divine Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Give yourself, gladly, to serving the boundless One.

It is through the teaching that the pure and formless One becomes clear to me.

The boundless One becomes clear through the teaching, not through cleverness.
The deeper layer

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole song.

Paarbarahm kee laaga-o sayv — give yourself to serving the Highest One. Paarbarahm means the One beyond every limit. Sayv means service, giving yourself gladly, the way you help someone you love.

Gur tay sujhai niranjan dayv — through the Guru, the pure One becomes clear. Niranjan means spotless, without any stain. Sujhai means to be seen clearly.

Think of a foggy window. Someone wipes it, and suddenly you can see the garden outside. The Guru, the Teacher, is the one who wipes the glass.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you understood only once someone helped you see it?
