Sikhism·Raag Gond·Shabad 9
Verse 5 of 5

Your Oldest Friend Of All

ਸਤਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਹੈ ਨਾਉ ॥
sat purakh jaa ko hai naa-o.
The Name is the True Primal Being;
ਮਿਟਹਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਅਘ ਨਿਮਖ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਉ ॥
miteh kot agh nimakh jas gaa-o.
millions of sins are washed away in an instant, singing His Praises.
ਬਾਲ ਸਖਾਈ ਭਗਤਨ ਕੋ ਮੀਤ ॥
baal sakhaa-ee bhagtan ko meet.
The Lord God is your best friend, your playmate from earliest childhood.
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਿਤ ਚੀਤ ॥੪॥੧॥੩॥
paraan aDhaar naanak hit cheet. ||4||1||3||
He is the Support of the breath of life; O Nanak, He is love, He is consciousness. ||4||1||3||

In plain words

The Name holds the true, living presence of the One.

Even a moment of singing its praise lightens a heavy heart.

The One is your closest friend, your playmate from your very first days.

The One is the support of your breath, made of love itself.

The vast Creator is also your oldest and closest friend.
The deeper layer

The Guru says the One is your oldest friend, there with you since you were tiny.

Sat purakh jaa ko hai naa-o — the Name belongs to the True Being. Sat means true. Purakh means being, the living One.

Miteh kot agh nimakh jas gaa-o — sing praise for a single moment, and millions of wrongs are wiped away. Agh means wrongs. Nimakh is the blink of an eye.

Then comes the most tender picture. Baal sakhaa-ee means a friend from earliest childhood, a playmate. Earlier the song spoke of the huge Maker of the whole world. Here that same One is the friend who played with you when you were small. Think of a friend who has known you since you were a baby. You never have to explain yourself to them.

The song ends with hit cheet, love and awareness. This is what the One is, and what the One wakes up in us.

A Question to Sit With

Who has been your friend the longest — and what makes that bond special?
