Raag Goojaree
Commentary

Raag Goojaree, Third Mehl, Panch-Padas (Guru Amar Das)

Every sacred river is inside a heart full of the One.

The Arc

The shabad severs wisdom from sacred geography: Benares neither makes nor unmakes wisdom — meeting the teaching does (P0). The practice is to listen and enshrine, and doubt leaves a steadied mind on its own (P1). Pilgrimage is relocated inward — rise past the five elements and the holy place is where you stand (P2). The self-enclosed mind, deaf by choice, is the dark mirror (P3). Then the thesis outright: all sixty-eight sacred fords and all scriptures live in a heart full of the One (P4); and the close ties everything to hukam and to belonging — the true are those dissolved in the True (P5).

Key Vocabulary

  • Benares / tirath — the holiest city and the sacred fords, here relocated into the mind (P0, P4).
  • "sixty-eight places of pilgrimage" — the full traditional roster, folded into one full heart (P4).
  • five elements — the bodily pulls to be risen past for the inner pilgrimage (P2).
  • hukam — the ordering Will understood on meeting the teaching (P5).

Themes and Cross-Connections

This is Goojaree's great inner-pilgrimage shabad, kin to Nanak's "real pilgrimage is conquering yourself" (Aasaa B00C684) and to the sutak/janeu reinterpretations of Aasaa ki Vaar: outer sanctity is not mocked but relocated to its true home, the heart. The "steady mind dissolves doubt" note (P1) restates the raag's conviction that a wobbling mind manufactures its own doubt.

For Raag Goojaree

A keynote of the raag's interiority: nothing holy is abolished, everything holy is brought home. The sacred river you would travel to is already flowing in a heart that remembers.
