Verse 3 of 5

Aim at Love and the Rest Arrives as Afterthought

sukh saagar har bhagat hai gurmat ka-ulaa riDh siDh laagai pag ohai.
Devotional worship to the Lord is an ocean of peace; through the Guru's Teachings, wealth, prosperity and the spiritual powers of the Siddhas fall at our feet.
jan ka-o raam naam aaDhaaraa har naam japat har naamay sohai. ||2||
The Lord's Name is the Support of His humble servant; he chants the Lord's Name, and with the Lord's Name he is adorned. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Loving the One is an ocean of peace; through the teaching, riches and even the famous mystic powers come and bow at your feet.

The Name is the whole support of the One's servant — they say the Name, and by the Name they are adorned.

Aim at love, and the things others strain for arrive as afterthoughts — no longer able to rule you.
The deeper layer

The verse relativizes everything people chase. Wealth and siddhis — the coveted supernatural powers of the yogis — are shown "falling at the feet" of one who simply loves the One; they become servants, not goals. Devotion is "an ocean of peace," and its adornment is the Name itself. The message: aim at love, and the things others strain for arrive as afterthoughts, no longer able to rule you.

A Question to Sit With

What are you chasing that might just... show up on its own if you aimed at something deeper?
