Verse 2 of 3

No Measured Effort Reaches What's Beyond Measure

ਬਹੁ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਅਤਿ ਬਡੋ ਗਾਹਰੋ ਥਾਹ ਨਹੀ ਅਗਹੂਚਾ ॥
baho bay-ant at bado gaahro thaah nahee aghoochaa.
Utterly infinite, exceedingly great, deep and unfathomable - He is lofty, beyond reach.
ਤੋਲਿ ਨ ਤੁਲੀਐ ਮੋਲਿ ਨ ਮੁਲੀਐ ਕਤ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਨ ਰੂਚਾ ॥੧॥
tol na tulee-ai mol na mulee-ai kat paa-ee-ai man roochaa. ||1||
His weight cannot be weighed, His value cannot be estimated. How can the Enticer of the mind be obtained? ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Utterly endless, immense, deep, unfathomable, lofty, beyond reach —

its weight can't be weighed, its worth can't be priced. How can the Enchanter of the mind be reached?

If the One is beyond all measuring, no measured effort of yours can reach it — which is exactly why grace is needed.
The deeper layer

The verse heaps up the language of immeasurability — "His weight cannot be weighed, His value cannot be estimated" — and then asks the honest question it raises: "how can the Enticer of the mind be obtained?" If the One is beyond all measuring, no measured effort can reach it. The verse sets up the answer of P2: not by our reaching, but by grace and the teaching.

A Question to Sit With

What can't be reached by effort or measurement, only received?
