We Build on Bonds That Can't Accompany Us

ਮੇਰਉ ਮੇਰਉ ਸਭੈ ਕਹਤ ਹੈ ਹਿਤ ਸਿਉ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਚੀਤ ॥
mayra-o mayra-o sabhai kahat hai hit si-o baaDhi-o cheet.
All say, "Mine, mine", and attach their consciousness to you with love.

But at the very last moment, none shall go along with you. How strange are the ways of the world! ||1||

In plain words

Everyone says 'mine, mine' and attaches themselves to you with affection.

But at the very last, none of them goes along with you. How strange the ways of the world are!

We build our lives on bonds that can't finally accompany us — seeing that redirects our ultimate trust to the one who does.
The deeper layer

This line notices something strange: we build our lives on bonds that can't come with us at the end.

Mayra-o mayra-o sabhai kahat hai — everyone says "mine, mine," and ties their heart to you with love. Ant kaal sangee nah ko-oo — but at the very last, no one goes along with you. Ih achraj hai reet — how strange the ways of the world are!

This is not said in a bitter way. It is said with wonder.

Think of friends at the airport. They can walk with you all the way to the gate, but not onto the plane. Seeing this clearly is not meant to spoil love. Love your people fully. It just points our deepest trust toward the One companion who does go with us, all the way.

A Question to Sit With

What have you built your security on that can't come with you all the way? What can?
