Loved Ones Can't Be Your Bedrock, and That Frees Love

Mother, father, friends, children, and spouse - no one is the support of any other.

For each and every individual, the Lord and Master provides sustenance; why do you fear, O my mind? ||2||

In plain words

Mother, father, friends, children, husband or wife — not one of them is finally the ground you stand on.

For every single being, the One provides what they need; so why be afraid, mind?

Loved ones can't be your bedrock — and that frees love, because no one has to carry what only the One can.
The deeper layer

This line is gentle and easy to misunderstand, so let's go slowly.

Janan pitaa lok sut banitaa — mother, father, friends, children, husband or wife. Ko-ay na kis kee Dhari-aa — no one is the final support of anyone else. This does not mean the people we love don't matter. It means they can't be the ground under everything, because they, like us, are held up by the One.

That actually takes a heavy weight off love. You don't have to be someone's whole foundation. And no one has to be yours.

Sir sir rijak sambaahay thaakur — the Master provides for each and every person. Kaahay man bha-o kari-aa — so why be afraid, O mind? Think of two kids on a trampoline. They hold hands and bounce together, but it is the trampoline that holds them both. Fear loosens when we stop asking people to carry what only the One can carry.

A Question to Sit With

Have you asked a person to be your whole foundation? How might it free them — and you — to loosen that?
