A Full-Looking Life Can Still Be Wasted

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਇਵੇਹਾ ਜੀਵਣਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
Dharig ivayhaa jeevnaa jit har pareet na paa-ay.
Cursed is that life, in which the Lord's Love is not obtained.
ਜਿਤੁ ਕੰਮਿ ਹਰਿ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
jit kamm har veesrai doojai lagai jaa-ay. ||1||
Cursed is that occupation, in which the Lord is forgotten, and one becomes attached to duality. ||1||

In plain words

A life where you never find the love of the One is a wasted life.

Work where the One is forgotten is wasted too. There you get stuck on feeling separate from everyone.

A life or a career can look full and still be wasted if it never once touched the love that makes it real.
The deeper layer

A life that never feels the love of the One is wasted, however full it looks.

Dharig ivayhaa jeevnaa sounds harsh. Dharig means cursed or shameful. It does not mean God puts a curse on you. It means wasted, like a phone full of apps with no charge. It looks full, but it cannot do the one thing that matters.

The second line says the same about work. Jit kamm har veesrai — work where the One is forgotten. There a person gets stuck in doojai, "the second thing." That means living as if you and the world were separate. Then the whole game becomes winning against everyone else.

A life can look like a big success and still be empty in this way. The verse names that emptiness so it can be filled.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you do that would still feel worth it even if nobody was keeping score?
