In plain words

They joined the company of good people and sang the One's praises.

By the Guru's grace their minds became clean, and they found the joy of all joys.

Good company plus praise opens the door, and grace does the cleaning — and the reward is the joy beneath all joys.
The deeper layer

Good company and singing open the door. Grace does the cleaning.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Har jas saaDhsang mil gaa-i-o — join the saadh sangat, the company of good people, and sing the One's praises. Gur parsaad bha-i-o man nirmal — by the Guru's grace, the mind becomes clean.

Notice who does the cleaning. It is grace, not scrubbing. The singing and the company open the door, and grace does the rest. Think of opening a window in a stuffy room. You only open it. The fresh air does the work. And the reward is sarab sukhaa sukh, the joy of all joys. It is not one fun thing among many. It is the joy underneath all the others, the one that lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What company and what activity together leave you feeling genuinely cleaner and lighter inside?
