Verse 3 of 4

See One Hand in Best and Worst, and Stand Steady

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
aath pahar har kay gun gaavai bhagat paraym ras maataa.
Twenty-four hours a day, he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, absorbed in loving devotional worship.
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਦੁਹੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥੨॥
harakh sog duhu maahi niraalaa karnaihaar pachhaataa. ||2||
He remains unaffected by both fortune and misfortune, and he recognizes the Creator Lord. ||2||

In plain words

Around the clock he sings the One's praises, lost in loving devotion.

Good fortune and bad leave him untouched, and he recognizes the Creator in it all.

When you see the same hand in your best days and your worst, neither can knock you off your feet.
The deeper layer

The verse portrays the freed person's equanimity. Continuous praise "absorbed in loving devotional worship" produces a steadiness that stays level through "both fortune and misfortune." This is not numbness — he still lives, still feels — but he is "unaffected" in the sense of un-toppled, because he "recognizes the Creator" in every turn of luck. When you see the same hand in the high days and the low, neither can throw you off your feet. Praise is what trains that seeing.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay steady when good news and bad news arrive in the same week?
