Verse 2 of 3

The Ache of Accumulation Has No End

ਕਉਡੀ ਕਉਡੀ ਜੋਰਤ ਕਪਟੇ ਅਨਿਕ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਇਓ ॥
ka-udee ka-udee jorat kaptay anik jugat kar Dhaa-i-o.
Shell by shell, you accumulate money; in various ways, you work for this.
ਬਿਸਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇਤੇ ਦੁਖ ਗਨੀਅਹਿ ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਖਾਇਓ ॥੧॥
bisrat parabh kaytay dukh ganee-ah mahaa mohnee khaa-i-o. ||1||
Forgetting God, you suffer awful pain beyond measure, and you are consumed by the Great Enticer, Maya. ||1||

In plain words

Coin by coin you pile up money, working every angle for it.

Forgetting the One, you carry a measureless ache, and the Great Enticer eats away at you.

The ache of endless accumulation is measureless because the wanting has no end — each coin adds to both the pile and the hunger.
The deeper layer

The verse diagnoses the treadmill of accumulation — "shell by shell you accumulate money" — and names its hidden cost: "awful pain beyond measure" and being "consumed by the Great Enticer, Maya." The pain is measureless precisely because the wanting has no end; each coin adds to the pile and to the hunger. Forgetting the One isn't punished by an outside hand; the forgetting is the ache. The glitter doesn't just distract — it slowly consumes the one who serves it.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a 'pile' you keep adding to, hoping it will finally feel like enough? Does it?
