In plain words

You are the almighty One, giver of shelter, ender of pain, king of joy.

Troubles leave, and fear and doubt clear, when the glories of the spotless One are sung.

The One is named not in the abstract but by what it does — shelter for the exposed, relief for the hurting, joy for the joyless.
The deeper layer

This opening verse calls the One by names that tell what the One does for us.

Too samrath — You are all-powerful. Saran ko daataa — the Giver of shelter. Dukh bhanjan — the Breaker of pain. Sukh raa-ay — the King of joy.

Each name answers something people need. Someone out in the rain needs shelter. Someone hurting needs the pain eased. Someone sad needs joy. Think of how a child describes their mom: "She makes my lunch, she fixes my bike, she hugs me when I cry." That is love told through what someone does.

How does the help come? Through praise. Jaahi kalays mitay bhai bharmaa — troubles go, and fear and doubt clear away. That happens when a person sings the praises of the nirmal, spotless, One. The One is not described from far away. The One is drawn in acts of rescue.

A Question to Sit With

Which of those — shelter, relief from pain, or joy — do you most need named for you right now?
