A Devoted Life Ripples Through a Whole Family

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਦੀਨ ਦੈਆਲਾ ॥

One who sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, twenty-four hours a day, and remembers the Lord in meditation, who is Kind to the poor,

saves himself, and redeems all his generations; all of his bonds are released. ||3||

In plain words

Someone sings the One's praises all day and night. They remember the One, who is kind to the poor.

That person is set free, and so are all their generations. Every bond comes loose.

The good of a devoted life ripples through a whole family — and the one who blesses others is themselves set free.
The deeper layer

A person who keeps remembering the One is set free, and the good of it reaches their whole family.

Aath pahar means all eight watches of the day, around the clock. Such a person sings the One's praises. They remember the One as deen dai-aalaa, kind to the poor and weak.

Then the reward grows wider than one person. Aap tarai — they themselves cross over. Sangat sabh uDhrai — all those joined with them are lifted up too. The good of a devoted life is not kept private.

Think of dropping a stone in a still pond. The ripples spread out in every direction. A loving, remembering life spreads like that through a family. An earlier shabad in this raag, a mother's prayer for her son, said the same thing: remembering the One blesses those close to us.

Last, binsay sagal janjaalaa — all their tangles are undone. The person who blesses others is set free too.

A Question to Sit With

Whose life might be quietly blessed, backward or forward, by the way you tend your own?
