ਚੇਤਹੁ ਬਾਸੁਦੇਉ ਬਨਵਾਲੀ ॥
chaytahu baasuday-o banvaalee.
Center your mind on the all-pervading Lord, the Wearer of garlands of the jungles.
ਰਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam ridai japmaalee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Let your rosary be the chanting of the Lord's Name in your heart. ||1||Pause||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Fix your mind on the One who fills everything, the One garlanded with the whole wild world.
Let your prayer-beads be the One's name, told over in your heart.
The truest prayer-beads aren't in your hand but in your heart — devotion needs no equipment.
The Pause line relocates religion inward once more: the true "rosary" is not beads in the hand but "the chanting of the Lord's Name in your heart." The counting device becomes an inner act. And the One is imaged wearing "garlands of the jungles" — adorned by the wild, natural world itself, not by temple gold. Devotion here needs no equipment; the heart is the instrument, and creation is the adornment.
A Question to Sit With
What inner 'practice' could you carry everywhere, needing nothing external at all?
