In plain words

In the terrifying wilderness I found the one companion: the Name, which destroys distress.

I give myself again and again to the beloved good; Nanak says, through them my affairs came right.

Life can feel like a frightening wilderness — but one reliable companion, and good company, changes everything.
The deeper layer

The Shalok pictures life as a "dreadful wilderness" and names the "one and only companion" found there — the Name. In a wild and frightening place, one reliable companion makes all the difference; you are not alone in the wilderness. And gratitude flows to "the Beloved Saints," the good company through whom "my affairs have been brought to fulfillment." The wilderness is crossed with a companion and in good company.

A Question to Sit With

What is the 'one companion' you'd want with you through a wilderness stretch?
