Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀਹੋ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
raam japahu vadbhaageeho jal thal pooran so-ay.
Meditate on the Lord, O fortunate ones; He is pervading the waters and the earth.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਧਿਆਇਐ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥
naanak naam Dhi-aa-i-ai bighan na laagai ko-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and no misfortune shall strike you. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Think on the One, you fortunate ones — it fills the waters and the earth.
Nanak says: remember the Name, and no misfortune will strike you.
Some truths are worth repeating — turn to the all-pervading One, and misfortune cannot finally sweep you off.
A near-repeat of P40, and the repetition is deliberate — the Vaar drums its central counsel as it nears the end: the One is everywhere ("pervading the waters and the earth"), so remember it and be safe. In a ballad, refrains land the message deep. What is worth saying once is worth saying again: turn to the all-pervading One, and misfortune cannot finally sweep you away.
A Question to Sit With
What steadying truth do you need to hear repeated until it sinks all the way in?
