Verse 2 of 6

The Failure of Ritual Opens the Door to a Truer Gift

ਮਾਈ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਹਾ ਲੈ ਚਰਾਵਉ ॥
maa-ee gobind poojaa kahaa lai charaava-o.
O mother, where shall I find any offering for the Lord's worship?
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਫੂਲੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
avar na fool anoop na paava-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I cannot find any other flowers worthy of the incomparable Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Mother — where am I to find an offering fit for the One?

I can't find any flowers worthy of the One beyond compare.

Since no external offering could ever be 'worthy' of the One, the failure of ritual opens the door to a truer gift.
The deeper layer

When no gift seems good enough, a better gift is waiting. This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

maa-ee gobind poojaa kahaa lai charaava-o — Mother, where can I find an offering for God? avar na fool anoop na paava-o — I cannot find flowers worthy of the One beyond compare.

This is real humility. Nothing we could bring truly matches the One. But it is not despair. It is the start of a discovery. Think of wanting to buy your mom the perfect gift and finding nothing good enough. Then you realize a hug and your time mean more. Since no outside gift measures up, the offering will be something else, as a later verse shows. The failure of the ritual opens the door to the real gift.

A Question to Sit With

When nothing you could 'give' feels good enough, what might you offer instead of an object?
