My mind, why so puffed up with pride?
Everything you see in this fading world is, in the end, only ashes.
Pride swells over things that are, in time, only ashes — seeing that clearly deflates the puffed-up self to its right size.
The Pause line punctures pride with a memento-mori: "whatever is seen in this... world is only ashes." The ego swells over things that are, in time, dust. This is not to make life meaningless but to make pride absurd — how can you be arrogant over what will not last? Seeing the ashes clearly deflates the puffed-up self back to its right, humble size.
A Question to Sit With
What are you a little proud of that, seen honestly, won't outlast you? Does that soften it?
