The One Thing That Comes With You

ਸਗਲ ਭਰਮ ਡਾਰਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਹਿ ॥
sagal bharam daar deh gobind ko naam layhi.
So give up all your doubts, and utter the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਅੰਤਿ ਬਾਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਇਹੈ ਏਕੁ ਜਾਤੁ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ant baar sang tayrai ihai ayk jaat hai. ||1||
At the very last moment, this alone shall go along with you. ||1||

In plain words

Throw away all your doubts, and say the Naam of the One who cares for the whole world.

At the very end, this alone will go along with you.

Almost everything is left at the door; the Naam goes with you.
The deeper layer

At the very end, the Naam is the one thing that goes with you.

Sagal bharam daar deh — let go of every doubt. Gobind ko naam layhi — hold on to the Name of the One. Gobind is a name for the One who looks after the whole world.

The next line is a quiet anchor: ant baar sang tayrai — at the very last, this alone goes with you.

The Name is not a magic word. It means keeping the One close in your mind. It is like keeping someone you love in your thoughts, even when they are not in the room.

At the end, everything else stays at the door: money, fame, even the body. Think of the last day of school. You empty your locker and leave the books behind. The friendships come home with you.

What you loved and remembered is what you carry across. So the end is a homecoming.

A Question to Sit With

If you could carry only one thing forward from your whole life, what would you want it to be?
