The jewel of the One's Name lives inside my heart; the teacher laid a hand on my forehead.
The wrongs and pains of countless lifetimes are thrown out. The teacher gave me the Name, and my whole debt is paid off.
Guru Ram Das is saying that the most precious thing you could ever own is already inside you. He calls the Name a ratan, a jewel. It is the first picture in Raag Jaitsree (a raag is a musical mood), and it comes back again and again. The jewel is not bought from outside. It is found within, like a gift that was in your own backpack all along.
What helps him find it? A tender touch. Gur haath Dhari-o mayrai maathaa — the Guru put a hand on my forehead. It is the kind of blessing a parent gives a child. The same picture matters in Raag Devgandhaari too.
Then comes a word worth stopping on: rin, a debt. Many of us carry a feeling that we owe something. Old mistakes. Guilt that piles up. A list we can never quite balance. Rin laathaa — the debt is paid off. It is not paid by years of making up for it. It is paid by grace, a free gift. The account is cleared, and you can put that heavy bag down.
What's it like to carry a feeling of 'owing' — old mistakes you can't undo? What would it feel like to have that weight simply cleared?
