Give Everything and Find the One Was Right Here

jee-a paraan man tan sabh arpa-o neera-o paykh parabh ka-o neera-o. ||1||
I dedicate my soul, my breath of life, my mind, body and everything to Him: I behold God near, very near. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I give my soul, my breath, my mind, my body, my everything to the One — and I see it near, so very near.

When you give everything to the One, holding nothing back, you don't lose it to a faraway place — you discover the One was right here, closer than close, all along.
The deeper layer

The self-offering is total — "soul, breath, mind, body, everything" — and its reward is not distance but nearness: "I behold God near, very near" (nikaT nikaT, close and close, echoing the nerai hi te nera of Devgandhaari). Guru Arjan links complete giving with complete nearness: when you hold nothing back, you discover the One was never far. The offering does not send the gift away to a distant deity; it reveals the One who was right here all along. To give everything is not to lose it but to find the Beloved standing closer than you knew.

A Question to Sit With

Is it possible that giving something completely, holding nothing back, actually brings you closer to it rather than losing it?
