The Treasure Is in Everyone's House; the Teacher Brings Light
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One kept this jewel hidden inside my mind.
Merciful to the humble, the One led me to the Holy Guru; meeting the teacher, I came to see the jewel's worth.
The rooms of the self-directed are dark with not-knowing; in their house, the jewel stays invisible. They wander lost in the wilderness, feeding on the venom of illusion.
The refrain reveals where the jewel was all along: "hidden within my mind." You do not go get it; you discover it. And the crucial detail — it was invisible to the manmukh not because it wasn't there, but because "their rooms are dark." The jewel is in everyone's house; the difference is whether there is light to see it by. The teacher brings that light. Guru Ram Das's picture is not that some people have the treasure and others don't — everyone has it — but that some are in the dark, mistaking the venom of illusion for nourishment, unable to see the diamond in their own room.
If something precious is already in your 'room,' what kind of 'light' would help you finally see it?
