In plain words

O my mind, chant the Naam of the One, the Lord of the Universe.

I was caught, spinning in a whirlpool of poison and wrongdoing. The True Guru gave me a hand, lifted me up, and pulled me out.

When you are pulled under, a helping hand can lift you right out.
The deeper layer

When you are spinning and sinking, the Guru reaches out a hand and pulls you out.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Jap man raam naam jagannaath means "O my mind, chant the Naam of the Lord of the Universe."

Ghooman ghayr paray bikh bikhi-aa means "caught in the whirlpool of poison and corruption": habits and wants that spin you round and pull you down. Satgur kaadh lee-ay day haath means "the True Guru gave me a hand and pulled me out." Think of a lifeguard reaching into the water and hauling a swimmer up onto the boat.

A Question to Sit With

Who has reached out a hand when you felt like you were sinking?
