The Filth Of Ego Washes Away

janam janam kee ha-umai mal laagee mil sangat mal leh jaavaigo.
The filth of egotism from countless incarnations sticks to me; joining the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, this filth is washed away.

As iron is carried across if it is attached to wood, one who is attached to the Word of the Guru's Shabad finds the Lord. ||2||

In plain words

The dirt of ego has stuck to me through life after life. Joining the Sangat, that dirt washes away.

As iron is carried across the water when it is tied to wood, so whoever holds on to the Guru's Word finds the One.

The Sangat washes away the heaviness of ego.
The deeper layer

Being with the Sangat washes away the grime of ego, and the Guru's Word carries you across.

Janam janam kee ha-umai mal: the dirt of ha-umai, ego, the feeling of being a separate self, built up over many lifetimes. Mil sangat: joining the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Like a muddy shirt in warm, soapy water, the grime lets go. Ji-o lohaa tari-o sang kaasat: iron sinks alone, but tied to a log, it floats across. Holding on to the Guru's Word does the same for you.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people whose company leaves you feeling lighter and kinder?
