You Reap What You Plant

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰੈ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਾਪ ਕੋਇਲੇ ਆਨਿ ਜਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
ha-umai karai karaavai ha-umai paap ko-ilay aan jamaavaigo.
They act in egotism, and make others act in egotism; they collect and gather up the blackness of sin.
ਆਇਆ ਕਾਲੁ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਹੋਏ ਜੋ ਬੀਜੇ ਸੋ ਖਵਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੬॥
aa-i-aa kaal dukh-daa-ee ho-ay jo beejay so khalaavaigo. ||6||
And when death comes, they suffer in agony; they must eat what they have planted. ||6||

In plain words

People act from ego, and get others to act from ego too. They pile up wrongdoing like heaps of black coal.

When death comes, it brings them pain. They must eat what they have planted.

What you plant today is what you will gather later, so plant kindness.
The deeper layer

What you do from ego piles up like coal, and in the end you gather what you planted.

Ha-umai: ego (haumai — the feeling of being a separate self). Paap ko-ilay: wrongdoing pictured as black coal, heaped higher and higher. Kaal: death, the moment the harvest comes in. Jo beejay so khalaavaigo: you eat what you plant, like a farmer who gets the crop of the seed he sowed.

A Question to Sit With

What is a good seed you could plant today by how you act?
