Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One, my Master, is my companion and my breath of life; the One is my best friend. My mind, body and tongue are tuned to the One, Har, Haray, Haray. The Naam of the One is my wealth and everything I own.
Only the bride whose good fortune it is wins her Beloved. Through the Guru's teaching, she sings the praises of the One, Har, Har, Haray, Haray. Nanak says: I give myself, I give myself, again and again, to the One. Meditating on the One, I am filled with joy, joy, joy.
When your whole self is tuned to the One, the Naam becomes your treasure.
The One is called breath, friend, and dearest companion here. Then comes the picture of a bride and her beloved, used all through Gurbani for every person's love of the One. Jaa ko bhaag: the one whose good fortune has ripened. That heart receives suhaag, a bride's joy of union, and starts to sing.
Raam naam Dhan maal: the Naam is wealth and property, the only savings that matter. Think of what you would grab if you could keep just one thing. Ha-o bal balay means giving your whole self gladly, like a friend who says, "I'm all in." Guru Ram Das signs his verses as Nanak.
What is one thing that feels so good you would call it your true treasure?
