Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

What should I do, and how should I do it?

Should I sit in meditation, or study the wisdom of the Shastras, the old holy books? How can I bear this state that is too great to bear?

Sometimes the hardest thing to hold is a joy that is simply too big.
The deeper layer

When something is too great to hold, you may not know which way to turn.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Dharat Dhi-aan is settling into meditation, and gi-aan sastargi-aa is knowing the scriptures. The seeker weighs the paths. Ajar pad kaisay jara-o: how can I bear (jara-o) the state no one can bear (ajar)? Many read this state as an overflow of grace, a joy too big to hold, rather than a lack.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt so happy it was almost too much to contain?
