Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Lord of the breath of life, the kind and first Being of all, is my Friend.

The One saves us from being born again and again, and from the trap of death in this dark age, and takes away our pain.

The One who holds your very breath is also your steadiest friend.
The deeper layer

The One who holds your breath is your Friend, and carries you through birth and death.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Paraanpat is the lord of the breath of life. Sakhay means friend. Garabh jon is the womb, being born again and again; kal is the dark age of Kali; kaal jaal is the noose of death. Dukh binaasan: the One takes the pain away. The frightening pictures are all there, and the Friend carries you through them.

A Question to Sit With

Who is a friend who helps you through the hardest passages?
