One Drop For The Songbird

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗਮੁ ਹੈ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਭਰਿ ਸਾਗਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥

The True Guru is Inaccessible; Inaccessible is our Lord and Master. He is the overflowing Ocean of bliss - worship Him with loving devotion.

Please take pity on me, and be Merciful to this meek song-bird; please pour a drop of Your Name into my mouth. ||4||

In plain words

The True Guru is beyond reach; beyond reach is my Master. The One is an overflowing ocean of joy — worship the One with love.

Be kind to me, be kind. I am a meek little song-bird. Please pour one drop of Your Naam into my mouth.

You do not need the whole ocean; one true drop of the Name is enough to live on.
The deeper layer

One drop of the Naam is all the thirsty little bird asks for.

The satgur, the True Guru, and the Master are agam, beyond reach. The One is bhar saagar, a brimming ocean of joy. We come close through bhagat, loving devotion.

Then comes a favorite picture in Gurbani, the words of the Gurus. The saaring is the rain-bird, also called the chaatrik. People believed it drinks only falling raindrops. It waits with its beak open to the sky.

The seeker says: I am that meek bird. Ik boond naam mukh deejai: please put one drop of the Name in my mouth. Not a bucket, just one drop. The prayer is humble, empty-handed and trusting.

A Question to Sit With

What is one small thing you long for that would mean everything to you?
