Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One's servant sings the One's praises and blossoms like a flower.

Through the Guru's teaching, my mind is made beautiful with love for the One, Har, Har. The One wrote this on my forehead from the very beginning.

Singing love into yourself can open your heart like a flower.
The deeper layer

Singing the praise of the One makes a person bloom like a flower.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Har jan gun gaavat hasi-aa: the servant sings and blossoms. Hasi-aa means laughing open, the way a bud opens in the sun. Mat gurmat: the mind shaped by the Guru's teaching. Dhur mastak likhi-aa, written on the forehead from the beginning, is an old way of saying this love was meant for you all along.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love so much it has become part of how you think?
