Like A Fish Loves Water

ਸਾਧੂ ਸਾਧ ਸਾਧ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਖੇ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੀਜੈ ॥

The Beloved Lord is within the minds of the Holy, the Holy Saadhus; without seeing Him, they cannot survive.

ji-o jal meen jalaN jal pareet hai khin jal bin foot mareejai. ||5||
The fish in the water loves only the water. Without water, it bursts and dies in an instant. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Beloved lives in the minds of the holy, the holy ones. Without seeing the One, they cannot live.

A fish loves only the water. Out of the water, even for a moment, it dies.

Deep love is like a fish and water — the one you love is where you live.
The deeper layer

The holy love the One the way a fish loves water: they cannot live without it.

The Beloved lives within the saaDh, the holy. Bin daykhay reh na sakeejai: without seeing the One, they cannot go on. The jal meen, the fish in water, is the classic picture of a love so complete that the beloved is life itself. Khin jal bin: even a moment without water is too much. This is longing language, the language of whole belonging.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love so much it feels like part of who you are?
