Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Your living Name is like sweet nectar — and the one who truly sings it is the one your own heart loves. You belong to the awakened ones, and they belong to you; you are theirs and they are yours. Their hearts have settled completely into you, fully content, fully at home.
This pauri describes the mutual belonging between the One and the sant (the awakened, the saints). First, who really sings the amrit naam (the nectar-Name)? Soee gaavai jo saahib terai man bhaavai — "the one who sings it is the one pleasing to your mind." This continues the Rahao's logic: even singing the Name rightly is not a technique to master but flows from being in tune with the One. You do not sing your way into the One's favor; being aligned with the One is what makes the singing real.
Then the beautiful reciprocity: toon santan kaa, sant tumaare — "you belong to the saints, and the saints belong to you." This is a relationship of mutual possession, the deepest intimacy. It is not that the saints worship a distant master; they belong to each other. The One is theirs as much as they are the One's. In love, possession runs both ways — the beloved belongs to the lover as truly as the lover to the beloved.
The verse ends with sant saahib man maanaa — "the saints' minds have maanaa (become settled, contented, fully accepting) in the master." The word maanaa carries the sense of a mind that has agreed, that has stopped resisting, that has come to rest. The saint is defined not by powers or austerities but by this: a mind utterly at peace in the One, in complete agreement with the bhaana (the will) the Rahao praised. The saint is simply the one who has stopped arguing with reality and settled, contented, into the One — and who therefore belongs to the One, and the One to them. To be a saint, this verse suggests, is less about extraordinary achievement and more about a heart that has fully said yes.
The saints' minds have "settled" — stopped resisting, come to rest in the One. What helps your own mind settle and feel truly at home? What stirs it up?
