The friend truly worth having, my real beloved companion, is the one who thinks on the Name of the One when we are together. With friends like that beside you, you make it across the rough, deep ocean of life. And the tight rope of fear that death wraps around us is cut clean through.
This verse answers a question every kid works on: what makes a good friend?
The world has lots of answers. Someone funny. Someone popular. Someone who likes the same games. Guru Arjan gives a deeper one. So-ee saajan meet pi-aaraa means "that one is my true friend and beloved companion." Which one? Raam naam saadhsang beechaaraa: the one who thinks on the Name of the One with you, in good company. A real friend isn't someone who agrees with everything you do. A real friend is someone who makes you better: more awake, more kind, more turned toward the light.
This is the heart of sat sangat, the "true company" of good people. Notice how it is pictured here. Not as a big formal gathering, but as friendship. Saadhsang, the company of the good, can be just two friends.
So here is a test for any friendship: which way does it point you? Does being with this person lift you toward your best self, or pull you toward your worst? Earlier shabads talk about saakat company, people turned away from the One, that drags you down. Saadhoo company, the company of good people, carries you up. The friends you choose will quietly shape who you become. You become the company you soak in, the way a sponge takes on the water it sits in.
The verse ends with two great pictures. Saadhoo sang tareejai saagar means "with good company, you cross the ocean." Life is a big, rough sea, and you don't swim it alone. Good friends are the boat. Katee-ai jam kee faasaa means "the noose of death is cut." The deep fear of ending, of being erased, loosens around people who keep the One alive in them. Their steadiness reminds you that you belong to something that doesn't end. Real friends don't just make the trip more fun. They help you make it all the way across.
Think of your friends. Which ones bring out your best self, and which ones pull you toward choices you regret? What does that tell you?
