One Thread Through Every Bead, Never Breaking

ਸਭ ਪਰੋਈ ਇਕਤੁ ਧਾਗੈ ॥
sabh paro-ee ikat Dhaagai.
Everything is strung upon the One String of the Lord.
ਜਿਸੁ ਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਸੋ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
jis laa-ay la-ay so charnee laagai.
Those whom the Lord attaches, are attached to His Feet.
ooNDh kaval jis ho-ay pargaasaa tin sarab niranjan deethaa jee-o. ||2||
Those, whose inverted lotus of the crown chakra is illuminated, see the Immaculate Lord everywhere. ||2||

In plain words

Everything that exists is threaded onto one single string. It is like beads on a necklace, all held together by the One.

Whoever the One draws close ends up resting at its feet.

When the closed-up flower of someone's heart opens and lights up, they look around. They see the pure One in everything.

Everything is beads on one necklace — and the thread running through all of them never breaks.
The deeper layer

This verse says everything is held together by the One, like beads on a single thread.

Sabh paro-ee ikat Dhaagai — everything is strung on one thread. It is a lovely picture of Ik Onkar, the One in all. Think of a mala (a string of prayer beads), or any necklace. The beads are all different colors and sizes. But one hidden thread runs through every bead. That thread turns a pile of loose beads into one necklace. The people, creatures, stars and moments of the world are the beads. The One is the thread. We usually see only the beads, but the thread is what makes them whole.

The shabad before this one spoke of the One who is also the many. This verse is gentler and closer. The One does not only become the many. The One holds the many together, so nothing scatters. Nothing is loose. No one is left alone. You and everyone you love are on the same thread, and that thread will not break.

The last line is about seeing this. Oondh kaval jis ho-ay pargaasaa — the heart is pictured as a lotus flower hanging upside down, closed, turned away from the light. It droops toward "me" and "mine." When grace turns it upright, it opens and lights up. Then tin sarab niranjan deethaa — that person sees the pure One in everything. You cannot force a flower open. It opens when grace touches it. And once it opens, the thread shows through every bead in the world.

A Question to Sit With

If you and everyone you know are beads on one unbreakable thread, who feels far away from you right now that's actually still strung right beside you?
