Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I would give anything — my whole self, my very life — for the people who keep God's **Naam** living inside their hearts. The ones who hold onto what is real and true never fall asleep inside; they stay awake and aware all day and all night. And in the place that matters most, the True Court, they are the ones who receive real honor.
This line says: stay awake to what is real, and you will be honored where it matters most.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the still center of the whole song. Everything else circles back to it. Guru Amar Das doesn't start with a command. He starts with overflowing love. Ha-o vaaree jee-o vaaree means "I give myself, my very soul, completely." To whom? Har kaa naam man vasaavani-aa: "to those who keep the Name of the One living in their minds." He isn't jealous of these people and he doesn't judge them. He adores them. The way they live is catching, and loving it is the first step toward it.
The key word is jaagay, "awake." Jo sach laagay say an-din jaagay means "those joined to Truth stay awake night and day." Lots of people are awake with their eyes open but asleep inside. They sleepwalk through life, chasing things that fade. Being an-din jaagay, awake day and night, means keeping the One in mind even while doing ordinary things: brushing teeth, riding the bus, doing homework. What keeps you awake is sach, what is real and lasting. When your heart holds onto what really lasts, you stop getting lulled to sleep by what doesn't.
The reward: dar sachai sobhaa paavni-aa means "they are honored in the True Court." Sobhaa is honor. Dar sachai is the True Court, the One's own presence, not the courts of the world. The world hands out honor for status, money and looks. Those are jhooth, not real, like a trophy made of chocolate that melts in the sun. The honor Guru Amar Das means is the quiet dignity of a soul that stayed awake to what was real. The sleeping bride in the verses to come is exactly the one who lost this awakeness.
Where in your day are you sleepwalking — going through the motions — and what would it feel like to be truly awake in that moment instead?
