When someone has lost their way deep down, whose hand can they even grab to be pulled out? What was written for us long ago cannot simply be rubbed out like pencil. But here is the good news: the ones who meet the **satgur**, the True Guru, are deeply lucky. Through a great fullness of grace, they finally come home to the One.
This verse says a lost mind can't pull itself out, but the Guru is a hand that reaches in from outside.
It stays with a hard truth for a moment before the relief comes. Jis aap bhulaa-ay so kithai hath paa-ay means "the one the Lord Himself lets stray, whose hand can they grab?" That sounds harsh. But Guru Amar Das is describing what being lost feels like. When you are circling your own ego, a manmukh, every direction you reach seems to go nowhere. That's because you are reaching with the very confusion you want to escape. It is like trying to find your glasses when you need your glasses to see. A lost mind can't save itself with more of its own thinking.
Poorab likhi-aa so maytnaa na jaa-ay means "what was written before can't be erased." It points to the weight of our past patterns, our karam or karma. The Guru is honest. You can't just wipe away the push of how you have lived, like rubbing out pencil. That isn't hopeless. It is just real. We are shaped by what came before. But the verse doesn't end stuck there.
The turn comes with the satgur, the True Guru, the true Teacher. Jin satgur mili-aa say vadbhaagee means "those who meet the True Guru are very fortunate." The Guru is the one hand worth grabbing, the one that reaches in from outside the closed circle of the ego.
And how does that meeting come? Poorai karam milaavani-aa means "through perfect grace, they are brought to meet." Here karam means blessing, grace, not only past deeds. This fits with the verse before. The lost can't rescue themselves, and grace reaches in anyway, through the Guru. The luckiest people aren't the ones with no past. They are the ones whose past finally cracks open enough to let the light in.
When you feel stuck and keep trying to fix it with the same kind of thinking, who or what could be the "hand from outside" that helps you see differently?
