Even Your Understanding Is a Gift

Night and day, they are attuned to His Love; they are pleasing to the Lord.

My God merges with them, and unites them in Union.

Forever and ever, O True Lord, I seek the Protection of Your Sanctuary; You Yourself inspire us to understand the Truth. ||7||

In plain words

The ones who stay soaked in the One's love day and night become dear to Him. My God draws them in and joins them to Himself, folding them right into His oneness. Forever and ever, True One, I want to live in Your shelter — and even my understanding of the truth is something *You* awaken in me; I couldn't figure it out on my own.

Even your understanding of the truth is a gift — so there's nothing left to do but rest in gratitude.
The deeper layer

Here shelter becomes union. The soul that took refuge is now joined with the One.

Mayrai parabh maylay mayl milaa-ay — my God merges them, and unites them in union. The word for joining comes three times in a row. It's like someone so happy they can only repeat themselves: together, together, together. Words almost run out at the moment of union. This answers the longing all through Raag Maajh — the lover gathered into the Beloved.

An-din raatay — night and day, soaked in love. This echoes the pause line and the soaked mind of the opening verse. It also flips the manmukh, who wandered "night and day," lost. Same hours, opposite use. Everyone spends their days on something. The question is whether those hours soak you in the One or scatter you among many things.

The last line is humble and deep: too aapay sach bujhaavani-aa — You Yourself make us understand the Truth. Even understanding is a gift. We don't grab the truth with cleverness. It is lit up for us, like a teacher switching on the lights so you can read the board. This is gurprasad, the Guru's grace, all the way down. The One stays hidden until grace shows Him. Even our power to recognize Him is a gift. Nowhere on the journey can the "me" plant a flag and say, "I did this." And that is not defeat. It is the deepest rest there is.

A Question to Sit With

Think of a time you suddenly "got" something important. Did it feel like you forced the insight, or like it arrived and opened up for you?
