The Beloved Was Beside You All Along

ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
jah jah daykhaa tah tah su-aamee.
Wherever I look, there I see my Lord and Master.
ਤੂ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
too ghat ghat ravi-aa antarjaamee.
You are permeating each and every heart, O Lord, Inner-knower, Searcher of Hearts.
gur poorai har naal dikhaali-aa ha-o satgur vitahu sad vaari-aa jee-o. ||2||
The Perfect Guru has shown me that the Lord is always with me. I am forever a sacrifice to the True Guru. ||2||

In plain words

Now, wherever I look, I see the One. Everywhere — there it is. You live inside every single heart, knowing it from within, closer to me than my own thoughts. The Perfect teacher pulled back the curtain and showed me: the One I was searching for was right beside me the whole time. For that, I would give the teacher everything, forever.

The One you searched the world for was beside you all along — the teacher's gift is simply lifting the veil so you can see it.
The deeper layer

Once the Beloved is found (Rahao), the seeker's eyes change — and suddenly she sees the One everywhere. Jah jah dekhaa tah tah suaamee — "wherever I look, there is my Master." This is the heart of Ik Onkar in this project's reading: not "one God up there" but the recognition that there is only oneness, no place where the divine is not. The same presence shines in every face, every leaf, every stone.

The word antarjaamee — the inner-knower — names the divine that dwells ghat ghat, "in heart after heart." It is not watching from outside; it is the awareness within each being, knowing every heart from the inside. The seeker has not traveled anywhere to find this. The Guru simply dikhaaliaa — showed it: har naal dikhaaliaa, "showed me the One is right beside me / with me." This is the great revelation of grace — nothing was added; the veil was lifted. What was always here became visible.

This is why the refrain returns: hau satgur vitahu sad vaariaa — "forever I am a sacrifice to the Guru." The gratitude doubles, because what the Guru gave was not a far-off prize but recognition of what was already true and already near. To be shown that the One you ached for never left your side — there is no gift greater, and no debt that could repay it.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever realized something was true the whole time, and you just couldn't see it until someone helped you? How did seeing it change things?
