Those who are dyed in truth have their love truly fixed on the One. They keep the divine Name alive in their hearts, and they are deeply fortunate for it. Through the true **shabad**, the One Himself joins them to Himself — and this happens in the **sat sangat**, the true company, where together they sing the praises of the True One.
This verse says you become true partly by keeping true company.
It names something the song hasn't said straight out yet: the satsangat, the true company of people who love the One. So far we have heard about one soul at a time, seeing and being dyed. Here Guru Amar Das reminds us it doesn't happen alone. Satsangat sach gun gaavani-aa means "in the true company, they sing the praises of the True One." It is in good company that the singing and the merging happen. This isn't a solo project. It grows out of the people around you.
Why? We become like the people we spend time with. Their moods, words and values seep into us, like a shirt taking on the smell of a campfire. The satsangat is the company whose very presence lifts you up. You leave better than you came. Among people dyed in truth, your own color gets deeper. Among people soaked in grabbing and gossip, you pick up their stains. So choosing your friends is itself a spiritual choice. Guru Amar Das treats true company not as a nice extra, but as one of the real engines of change.
Jo sach raatay tin sachee liv laagee means "those dyed in truth have their love fixed on the True One." Liv is loving attention, a heart tuned in. Har naam samaaleh say vadbhaagee means "those who keep the Name close are very fortunate."
Humility is woven in here too. Sachai sabad aap milaa-ay means "through the true Word, He Himself joins them to Himself." Even in the good company, the merging isn't something the group makes happen by effort. It is the One who does the joining, through the shabad, the Guru's Word, using the company as His instrument.
And why call such people vadbhaagee, "very fortunate," instead of "very accomplished"? Because the good thing was received, not earned. Being drawn into true company, having your love fixed on the One, keeping the Name alive: these are blessings to be thankful for, not trophies to show off. The luckiest thing that can happen to you, the verse quietly says, is to find yourself among people who sing the truth. Their company will carry you home.
Who is the "good company" that leaves you better than you arrived — and who leaves you worse? How do you know the difference?
