By the Guru's grace, I have come to know the One — just the One. With the sense of "a second thing" quieted, my mind has dissolved into the True One. Nanak says: the One Name is now alive and spreading all through my mind — and it came, as everything real does, by the Guru's grace.
This last verse says all of truth comes down to knowing the One, and even that knowing is a gift of the Guru's grace.
The song gathers all its sach, truth, into one point. Gur parsaadee ayko jaanaa means "by the Guru's grace, I know the One." After verse after verse soaked in truth, here is what truth finally is: seeing that there is only One. Everything the song has done, seeing truth everywhere, quieting wants, burning clinging, was clearing the way to this. To live in sach, in the end, is simply to know the One. To see through all the seeming "two-ness" to the one reality underneath.
So the song names its great enemy one last time. Doojaa maar man sach samaanaa means "quieting the sense of a second, my mind melted into the True One." Doojaa means "the second": the feeling that anything is separate from the One. This is the root trouble in all of Guru Amar Das's teaching, and here is the cure. As long as you believe there are two, me and the One, this and that, you stay apart. When the idea of "two" goes quiet, nothing is left to keep you separate, and the mind simply melts in. Like a wave realizing it was always the ocean. The whole spiritual struggle comes down to this: stop believing in the second thing.
The last line is the song's deepest comfort and its humblest "thank you" at once. Naanak ayko naam vartai man antar means "Nanak says, the One Name is alive all through my mind." The One isn't visited now and then. The Name has soaked all the way through and become the very air of the inner life. It is the true home inside that an earlier verse spoke of.
And how did all this come? Twice the answer rings out: gur parsaadee, "by the Guru's grace." By grace I know the One. By grace, gur parsaadee paavni-aa, I receive the Name. That is the perfect ending for a song about truth. The deepest truth is this humility: even my knowing the truth was given to me. I didn't climb up to the One. The One, through the Guru, showed Himself inside me. From start to finish it is all grace. Seeing that nothing was ever mine to brag about is the final and truest thing the song has to say.
What would change in how you treat people and the world if you really lived as though there were no "second thing" — only one connected whole?
