Love Matures Toward the Truth Behind the Face

ha-o gholee jee-o ghol ghumaa-ee tis sachay gur darbaaray jee-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to that True Court of the Beloved Guru. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

I would give myself away, my whole soul, to that true court of my beloved teacher — to the real, lasting place where you are. Everything I am, I would lay down there.

As love matures, it offers itself not just to the beloved's face but to the lasting truth the beloved opens onto.
The deeper layer

Again the refrain, and again it has deepened. The first Rahao offered the self to the beloved's darshan (sight); the second to the beloved as friend; now this one offers the self to tis sache gur darbaare — "that true court of the Guru." The word sach has entered — true, real, permanent. The seeker is no longer only sacrificing herself to a sight or a person, but to the real, lasting presence — the sach that does not fade.

This is significant in the project's framework. Earlier the longing was for the visible beloved; now it widens toward the true (permanent, genuine) reality the Guru embodies. The "court" (darbaar) is the realm of the Beloved's presence — and calling it sache (true) marks it as belonging to sach, the permanent, as opposed to the jhooth (impermanent) world of ego and status. The lover's devotion is being quietly educated: from longing for the form to longing for the timeless reality the form opens onto.

Yet the refrain stays the same in feeling — hau gholee jeeo ghol ghumaaee — the whole self still poured out. The deepening of the object does not cool the ardor. If anything, the love grows more total as it grasps that what it loves is real and will not pass away. This is the heartbeat catching once more before the final, resolving stanza.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between loving how someone looks or seems, and loving what is truest and most lasting in them?
