Nothing at all happens outside of You. You make everything, You watch over it, and You know it through and through. The Creator Himself acts, and moves others to act — and through the Guru's teaching, He blends us into Himself.
This verse says nothing happens outside the One, and seeing that lifts a heavy weight off our shoulders.
Tujh tay baahar kachhoo na ho-ay — nothing happens outside of You. An earlier shabad said the same. There is no "outside" the One. Every event, every action, every breath happens inside the One. This is Ik Onkar, the One in all, said as a simple rule: the One is not a part of reality but the whole of it. This is the hukam, the way everything runs.
Then comes a lovely set of three: kar kar vaykheh jaaneh so-ay — You make, You watch, You know. The One is not a clockmaker who wound up the world and walked away. The One makes it, watches over it, and knows it through and through. The last verse of this shabad will say it plainly: the One sits within and watches. So we are not lost in a world that does not care. We are made, held in the One's gaze, and fully known. For a child, that can feel like a warm blanket.
One line can puzzle us: aapay karay karaa-ay kartaa — the Creator acts, and moves others to act. If the One does everything, what about us? This is not about making us puppets. It gently lets the air out of the ego's claim: "I did this all by myself." That claim is ha-umai, the puffed-up "me" that the pause line said must go quiet. Even our good turns are sparked by the One. Gurmat aap milaavani-aa — through the Guru's teaching, He Himself joins us to Him. The point is not "you don't matter." It is "you are not a lone hero doing it all." That is a relief. Think of a kid on a team who finally stops trying to win the whole game alone. They play better and enjoy it more. When we stop trying to be in charge of everything, we can rest inside the One's doing.
Does it feel heavy to think you have to be the sole author of everything you do? What might lift if you trusted that you're held inside something larger?
