In plain words

The light of the Supreme Soul (**Atam Ram**) shines into you from the Guru. The grime stuck to your ego (**haumai**) is rubbed off by the Guru's **shabad**. A mind made clean, soaked day and night in devotion, keeps loving the One — and so finds Him.

The light was always burning inside you — the Guru doesn't give it, He just wipes the soot off the glass so it can shine.
The deeper layer

The opening phrase names the deepest reality: Atam Ram — the Supreme Soul, the One as the very self of all selves. And the teaching is that its pargaas — its light, its shining-forth — comes gur te, from the Guru. Now, this light isn't created by the Guru, and it isn't far away; it's the light already burning at the core of you (the nirmal jot in all beings, Shabad 67). So why does it need to come "from the Guru"? Because something is covering it. The next line names the cover: haumai mail — the grime of ego. The light was always there; the ego's grime was hiding it. The Guru's role is not to give you a light you lack, but to wipe away what was blocking the light you already had.

This is a beautiful image: imagine a lamp burning inside a soot-covered glass. The flame is fine; you just can't see it through the blackened glass. The Guru's shabad is the cloth that wipes the soot (gur sabdi khovai — the Word removes the grime). Suddenly the same flame that was always burning floods the room with light. So pargaas "from the Guru" really means: the Guru clears the haumai, and the inner light is revealed. Realization is uncovering, not acquiring (the heart of gurprasad — grace is noticing what was always here).

And the result is a lovely loop: man nirmal andin bhagti raata — the mind, once cleaned, soaks day and night in devotion. Notice the order — first the cleaning (the soot wiped off), then the devotion flows naturally and constantly. You don't have to force devotion onto a grimy, resistant mind; clear the ego-grime, let the inner light shine, and a clean mind naturally loves the One day and night. And bhagat kare har paavnia — that loving worship finds the One. The whole song will turn on this: the obstacle was never distance from the One, but the ego-soot hiding the light that was always within. Let the Guru wipe the glass.

A Question to Sit With

What "soot" might be covering up the good light that's already in you — and what helps wipe it clean?
