When you stay truly awake and aware — really paying attention, day and night — lies and fakeness slide right off you. They can't get a grip on a clear, watchful heart.
The spotless Name (**naam** — the living presence of the One) comes to live deep inside such a person. And their small light melts into the great Light, the way a candle flame disappears into bright sunshine.
The image here is non-stick. Koorh kusat tinaa mail na laagai — the filth of fraud and falsehood does not cling to them. Not because they are scrubbing constantly, but because of a quality of attention: gur parsaadee an-din jaagai, by grace they remain awake, night and day. Dirt sticks to what is dull and still; an awake, flowing awareness sheds it. Falseness needs a sleepy mind to settle into.
The word jaagai, awake, is doing real work. This is not about effort or vigilance in the anxious sense — it is the natural wakefulness of someone in whom the Name has taken up residence. And note it comes gur parsaadee, by the Guru's grace; the wakefulness is itself a gift, not a feat of willpower.
The final line is one of the great recurring images of all Gurbani: jotee jot milaavania — light merging into Light. The individual flame does not get extinguished; it merges, becomes indistinguishable from the source-fire. This is what union actually means here — not annihilation but homecoming, the drop into the ocean, the candle-flame into sunlight. The separate self was never a different substance from the One; awakening simply lets the flame remember it was always fire.
What helps you stay genuinely awake — and what tends to lull you back to sleep?
