Your Longing Is the Sign the Homecoming Was Written

ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jin sisat saajee so-ee jaanai.
The One who created the Universe, He alone knows it.
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
aapay maylai sabad pachhaanai.
He unites with Himself those who realize the Shabad.

O Nanak, they alone receive the Naam, upon whose foreheads such pre-ordained destiny is recorded. ||8||1||32||33||

In plain words

Only the One who made all of this truly knows it — the whole vast creation is far too big for any of us to size up or explain.

The One draws close those who wake to the Word. And the **Name** comes to those whose deepest story was always, quietly, pointing them home.

The creation is known only to its Maker — and the very longing you feel for the Name is the sign that the homecoming was always written into your story.
The deeper layer

This last verse bows before how big the world is, and trusts the One who made it.

Jin sisat saajee so-ee jaanai — the One who made the world is the only one who truly knows it. After a whole song of teaching about Maya, the three threads, the gods, the two brides and good company, it ends by admitting a limit. Only the Maker fully knows what was made. We can be pointed the right way, but we can't fit all of it in our heads. It's like standing at the edge of the ocean. You can't measure it, but you can stand there in wonder. The right answer to something that big isn't picking it apart. It is honoring it.

The path is said one more time: aapay maylai sabad pachhaanai — the One unites with Himself those who recognize the shabad, the Word. The Word is still the door. Wake to it, and you are drawn close.

Then Nanak's closing line holds a deep mystery: naanak naam mili-aa tin jan ka-o jin Dhur mastak laykh likhaavani-aa — the Naam, the Name, comes to those with it written on their forehead from the start. This can sound cold, as if everything is fixed and some are left out. But in these songs it means something softer. Nobody is shut out for no reason. The very longing to wake, the pull you feel toward the One, is itself the sign that coming home was written into your story. If you ache for the Name, that ache is the writing being read aloud. The grace that gives the Name and the longing that reaches for it are one movement: the One drawing home what was always His own.

A Question to Sit With

Could the longing you feel for something deeper be less a lack in you and more a sign of where you're meant to go?
