The One is right inside you — but hidden; too quiet and too close to be caught by ordinary eyes.
It has tucked the most precious jewel there is — the **Name** — deep within you, and kept it safely out of sight. This highest, unreachable One can't be figured out by the thinking mind. But the **Word** of the teacher is the key that opens the hiding place.
This one says the One has hidden a jewel inside you, and the Guru's Word is the key.
Guru Arjan starts with a mystery you carry in your own chest. Antar alakh na jaa-ee lakhi-aa — the Unseen One is inside, but can't be seen. Not missing, not far away, just hidden. The deepest things are often too close and too quiet for searching eyes. We look outside for the One, and all the while the One is folded inside.
The picture is hidden treasure: naam ratan lai gujhaa rakhi-aa — He has taken the jewel of the Naam, the Name, and kept it hidden. That's a tender and surprising thing to hear. You aren't empty, waiting to be filled from outside. You already carry the most precious thing there is. It is only covered up. So the spiritual life isn't about getting more. It's about uncovering what you already have, like finding a gift that was in your pocket all along.
And the One who hid it is agam agochar sabh tay oochaa — out of reach, beyond what the senses can grasp, higher than all. Far past what the mind can reach by thinking. So how is the hidden found? The last line gives the key: gur kai sabad lakhaavani-aa — through the Guru's shabad, the Word, He is known. The thinking mind can't pry the jewel loose, because the jewel is hidden from that kind of grabbing. But the Word reaches where thought can't. It doesn't explain the treasure. It opens the place where the treasure has been waiting all along.
What if the thing you keep searching for outside is something you've been quietly carrying within the whole time?
